A higher hand always wins. Same hand? The higher cards, then kickers.

How a winner is decided

  1. 1Best five of seven. In Hold'em you make the best five-card hand from your two hole cards and the five board cards. The two left over never count, not even as kickers.
  2. 2Category first. A higher category always wins. Any flush beats any straight, however low the flush and however high the straight.
  3. 3Then the cards that make it. Same category? Compare the cards that form the hand, highest first: the three of a kind in a full house, the top card of a straight, the higher pair in two pair.
  4. 4Then kickers, then split. If those match, the leftover cards in the five (the kickers) decide, highest first. Identical five cards split the pot. Suits never break a tie.
